New Restaurants in Downtown Evanston and Beyond: Fall 2026

Northlight Theatre opened its new home at 1012 Church Street on September 9, kicking off its first Evanston season in three decades with "The Front Page," running through October 18. The plywood that wrapped the block for most of 2026 is gone. The 287-seat house that took a year of construction to build is full of donor names on the seatbacks and a bar in the lobby. If you have lived here a while, you already know this. Here is a look at how the restaurant scene around it is taking shape.

This summer, three newsletter-style roundups covered Evanston restaurant news. The restaurant closest to Northlight has closed, while Alleyway Grill, planned for a space behind the theater, is targeting an early 2027 opening. Several other recent openings are farther from Church Street, on streets a short walk or drive away.

What Actually Opened This Year

Evanston's dining map changed more between February and August of 2026 than in the previous few years combined. Here is what landed, where, and who is behind it:

• Burl, 2545 Prairie Avenue, just off Central Street. Opened in February. Chef-owners Tom Carlin and Rachel Canfora-Carlin, a husband-and-wife team, in a small triangular building they had been eyeing since they were house-hunting in Evanston.
• Soul & Smoke's flagship, 1601 Payne Street. What used to be a catering and food-truck production facility became a full sit-down restaurant, with a grand opening on September 1.
• Chengdu Bistro, 1633 Orrington Avenue, replacing Mira Sushi. Soft opened in early August, grand opening August 10. Owner Edison Feng also ran the previous restaurant in that space.
• Tallgrass Corner Bar, 1921 Central Street, in the former Prairie Joe's space at Central and Prairie. Opened in July.
• UTaco, 2430 Main Street. Opened June 5. Owners Carlos Rueda and Natalia Báez came out of Mexico City's restaurant scene.
• The Spot, 1700 Central Street. An Italian tavern-and-pizza concept from the owners of the former Ten Mile House.
• Taverna Milos, tucked into the lobby of The GEM Museum Suites at 1555 Oak Avenue. Greek food from Chef Panagiotis Paschos, open for lunch and dinner, and easy to miss because it does not look like a standalone restaurant from the street.
• Fred's Bread Bakery & Café marked its Evanston opening with a ribbon-cutting on Bastille Day, July 14.

None of these are on Church Street. None of them were built around Northlight's calendar. That is the pattern worth sitting with.

The Storefront That Actually Sits Closest to the Marquee

The most anticipated opening on the North Shore this year is still a sign in a window. James Beard Award winners Beverly Kim and Johnny Clark, who built Parachute Hi-Fi and Anelya in Chicago's Avondale neighborhood, officially announced Alleyway Grill on July 22. It will sit at 1710 Sherman Avenue, inside the Varsity Building, facing Bookman's Alley, in the space directly behind the recently shuttered Guzman y Gomez. That is about as close to Northlight's front door as a restaurant can get.

It will not open this year. Kim and Clark are targeting early 2027.

The menu will lean into what they describe as their Midwestern roots rather than the Korean and Ukrainian traditions behind their Chicago restaurants. The Evanston RoundTable reported that Clark said the timing of the Evanston Farmers Market will shape what ends up on the plate: "it's got to be one of the best markets in the whole Chicago area." The same report quotes Kim describing the goal as food that is "excited to explore another part of our story by expressing the Midwest that shaped us."

So the restaurant with the most direct sightline to Northlight's stage door is not opening this year. Anyone planning a pre-show dinner around it this fall is planning around a construction permit, not a reservation.

The One That Outgrew Its Own Room

A block away, inside the Hilton Orrington at 1710 Orrington Avenue, a small plant-based restaurant called 17 opened January 16 with exactly 17 seats. By late summer it had closed, and LM Restaurant Group folded parts of its vegan menu into the hotel's other restaurant, Evanston Corner Bistro, citing demand that had outgrown the space.

That is not a story about a restaurant near Northlight failing to catch on. It is closer to the opposite. A concept succeeded fast enough that a 17-seat room stopped making sense, and the operator moved the food rather than the address. It is a useful reminder that proximity to a theater does not determine whether a restaurant works. Kitchen size, staffing, and whether the concept fits its room do that.

Who Is Cooking at Evanston's New Restaurants

To see some of the new restaurant activity beyond Church Street, look at who is cooking there. Tom Carlin ran the butcher program at Publican Quality Meats, worked as chef de cuisine at Dove's Luncheonette, and helped Galit earn its first Michelin star in 2022 before opening Burl with his wife on Prairie Avenue. Rachel Canfora-Carlin still runs recruiting and training for Hogsalt, the group behind Bavette's and Au Cheval. Burl seats 75, runs on a wood-fired hearth and a separate wood-burning oven, and keeps at least 80 percent of its menu sourced from the local food network.

Soul & Smoke's owners converted their own production kitchen on Payne Street into a sit-down room. These are operators who already lived in Evanston and already had a following here. Their restaurants are outside the Church Street corridor.

What This Means If You're Deciding Where to Eat This Month

The outdoor rhythm that structures an Evanston summer already wrapped. Downtown Summer Sounds ran its ninth and final Thursday concert at Fountain Square on September 3, and the Thursday Night Market closed out the same evening. The Evanston Farmers Market is still running every Saturday through November 7, so that part of the weekend hasn't changed yet.

What has changed is the theater itself. Northlight is open, seating audiences, and running "The Front Page" through October 18, with a second production, "All the World," starting in November. The Church Street corridor around it is still filling in slowly. The Addled Bunny, next door at 1010 Church Street, was aiming to open ahead of the season, though as of this month the storefront that used to house Guzman y Gomez remains unclaimed, and Alleyway Grill is targeting an early 2027 opening.

Several current dinner options include Burl, the Payne Street Soul & Smoke, Tallgrass Corner Bar, and Taverna Milos, all a short walk or drive from Church Street. The Northlight-adjacent restaurant scene is still developing.
